“Homosexuality in the News and in the Bible”

HOMOSEXUALITY IN THE NEWS AND IN THE BIBLE

By Wayne S. Walker

Recently a sister in Christ who is a member of the congregation where I labor gave me some clippings from her hometown newspaper, the News-Democrat and Leader.  It seems that a group of homosexuals have built a “gay” resort in Logan County, Kentucky.  Several letters to the editor were printed on the subject, with some for it and some against it.  The national media have even been attracted to the situation, and the controversy was to be aired on Geraldo Rivera’s program.  That’s about par for Geraldo!

One of the letter writers made a very interesting statement that demands and deserves a response.  Under the headline, “Local homosexual defends lifestyle,” he wrote, “I am Gay!  I am a Christian!  Who is to say the two cannot co-exist?”  This is one way that some have tried to justify homosexuality—combine it with religion.  There is a whole denomination, the Metropolitan Community Church, which caters primarily to homosexuals.  Each Saturday, the local Dayton [OH] newspaper runs a religious note about a Catholic mass sponsored by Dignity, a national organization of homosexual Catholics.  And nearly every major denomination has a “gay” caucus.

Might not someone else argue, “I am a hired killer!  I am a Christian!  Who is to say the two cannot co-exist?”  He could say about murder, as do many homosexuals about homosexuality, that the passages in the Bible which condemn it are only referring to abuses, such as cold-blooded murder for reasons of malice or revenge.  But he just murders as part of his job.  Besides, he needs the money to support his loving wife and children.  So in reality, he is not such a bad fellow after all!

Might not another argue, “I am a rapist!  I am a Christian!  Who is to say that the two cannot co-exist?”  His excuse would be, just like a lot of homosexuals, that God made him the way he is, with the desires and feelings which he has.  Therefore, the Lord must certainly approve of his behavior, or else He would have made him differently.  Besides, if God made him that way, then he is not responsible.  He cannot help what he does, and he is unable to change his lifestyle.  Thus, he should be allowed by society to continue his activities.

The writer of the letter goes on to say, “Jesus NEVER said anything whatsoever about Homosexuality!” (sic).  Is this not an amazing statement coming from one who claims to be a Christian?  Jesus, as God’s divine Son, is actually the author of the whole Bible.  And the Bible has a lot to say about homosexuality, always to condemn it!  The city of Sodom was destroyed because the people engaged in homosexuality (Genesis 18:20; 19:5, 24).  In the Old Testament law of Moses, homosexuality was specifically prohibited as an abomination in the sight of God (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13).

Furthermore, the New Testament is the revelation of God’s will for mankind today through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1-2).  It calls lesbianism and homosexuality vile passions, what is against nature, lust, what is shameful, and an error that is due a penalty (Romans 1:26-27).  And the inspired apostle Paul served as a spokesman for Christ (1 Cor. 14:37).  He said that those who practice homosexuality shall not inherit the kingdom of heaven, unless they repent, receive forgiveness of their sins, and change their lives (1 Cor. 6:9-11).  This is what Jesus had to say about homosexuality!

For several years now, homosexuals have been trying to “come out of the closet” and demanding their civil liberties.  Now that we have a President-elect who appears to favor homosexual rights, we can probably expect to see more of this with a vengeance.  According to the Jonesboro (AR) Sun (5/21/92), Bill Clinton, as governor of Arkansas, wanted to repeal Arkansas’ sodomy law which makes same-gender sex illegal.  In the Reader’s Digest (10/92) Clinton said, “I’ve taken a very strong stand against any discrimination against gays and lesbians.”  Does that include guaranteeing them the right to serve as school teachers, guidance counselors, scout leaders, little league coaches, and even ministers in the Lord’s church?

In addition, reports are that Clinton has already prepared an executive order which will overturn the military’s current practice of banning known homosexuals from participation in the armed forces, to be put in force shortly after his inauguration.  [2011 note: Of course, what he got was a backlash even from some of his fellow Democrats resulting in “Don’t Ask—Don’t Tell,” which has now been overturned by the current President Obama with the help of Democrats and a few limp-wristed Republicans.]  Evidently Mr. Clinton feels that he owes a deep debt of gratitude to the “gay community” who worked so hard to see that he was elected.  I personally am concerned about the direction in which this nation is headed.  “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Prov. 14:34).

An editorial in the News Democrat and Leader on the subject of the homosexual resort in Logan County said, “Everyone has the right to his opinion, and everyone has the right to live his life as he chooses.  Freedom is the foundation of our country.”  Surely, we should cherish our freedom.  But why is this same concept not extended toward the murderer and the rapist mentioned earlier?  Do they not have the right to live their lives as they choose?  If it be argued that what they do hurts people and society whereas homosexuality is a “victimless” practice, a quick look at the history of ancient Greece and Rome will show that homosexuality is just as much a blight on society and just as harmful to a nation as murder and rape.

The statement from the editorial quoted in the previous paragraph fairly well illustrates the general attitude of the liberal media.  “Live and let live.  Don’t rock the boat or make waves on moral issues.  Yes, everyone has the right to his opinion, but if your opinion isn’t in line with ours or the humanistic, leftist intelligentsia, then PLEASE KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!”  Regardless of what the prevailing standards of our culture are, or even what the law of the land might be, our responsibility as Christians is clear.  “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Eph. 5:11).

[Note:  I originally wrote this article in 1992.  However, it is still relevant today because we have another President who is bound and determined to homosexualize America, and indeed the radical homosexual activists have accomplished much in our society since then to foist their perversion off on the public as simply “an alternative lifestyle.”  WSW.]
