OUR HELP IS IN THE NAME OF THE LORD
by Wayne S. Walker
“Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 124:8). The little child who wanders off in unfamiliar territory and gets lost needs help. The person who cannot swim and is drowning after falling into the water needs help. That poor woman who knows nothing about automobile mechanics and whose car is pulled off the highway in the desert with the hood up and smoke billowing out needs help.
The fact is that all of us, at some time and in some way or another, need help. Of course, the main problem that we face in life is that of sin (Romans 3:23). And we certainly need help in dealing with that problem because being saved from sin is “not by works of righteousness which we have done” (Titus 3:5). Also, because of the consequences of sin in this life, we need help in living happy and productive lives because “the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps” (Jeremiah 10:23).
It is good to have friends and others in this life who will take time out to help us in various situations. However, there are some areas of our lives in which no man can provide the real help that we need. To whom can we go? “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God,…let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16). Our help is in the name of the Lord!
