The Most High

by Wayne S. Walker

“That they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth” (Psalm 83:18). We use the word “high” in both its basic physical sense and in various metaphorical ways. In the physical sense, the top of a building is high. A mountain is even higher. The sun is still higher.

Yet, there are heavenly bodies that are even higher from the earth than the sun. In the metaphorical sense, the mayor of a town is in a relatively high position to most citizens. However, the governor of the state in which the town exists is even higher. And, of course, the President of our nation is higher still.

In our system of government, there is no higher office than that of the President, but he is not absolute. The executive branch was intended to be equal with the legislative (Congress) and the judicial (Supreme Court). And there are other nations on earth too. However, there is one who is higher than the sun and stars and than all nations on earth, Him whose name alone is Jehovah.
