Marvelous Things That God Does

by Wayne S. Walker

"Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan" (Psalm 78:12).  The Bible is the revelation of God to mankind and contains the record of some of the marvelous things that He has done in the history of the world.  While the Bible does not teach that God operates in miraculous ways today, He is still capable of doing, and in fact does, marvelous things for us, just as He did for His people in times past.

"He divided the sea and caused them to pass through; and He made the waters stand up like a heap" (Psalm 78:13).  God gave Israel protection from drowning the Red Sea, and from the Egyptian armies as well, as they passed through on dry ground (Exodus 14:21-31).  Today, He offers us protection from the temptations of the evil one.  "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way to esape, that you may be able to bear it" (1 Corinthians 10:13).

"In the daytime also He led them with the cloud, and all the night with a light of fire" (Psalm 78:14).  On the journey from Egypt to Canaan, God gave the Israelites guidance with the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21-22).  On our journey from earth to heaven, He offers us guidance through His written word.  "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

"He split the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink in abundance like the depths" (Psalm 78:15).  In addition, God gave the people of Israel water as provision for their physical need (Exodus 17:1-6).  In like manner, He offers us the water of life as provision for our spiritual needs.  Jesus said, "But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.  But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14).  Truly, God has done and is still doing many marvelous works for His people today.
