"THE EARTH IS THE LORD’S"
By Wayne S. Walker
"The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein" (Psalm 24:1). The whole earth itself belongs to the Lord because He created it. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). In fact, God said, "Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool" (Isaiah 66:1). Because the earth belongs to Him, He has the right to do with it what He wills, and He tells us that someday He will destroy it. "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up" (2 Peter 3:10). Peter went on to tell us that we need to be prepared for that great day.
Also, all the animals of the earth belong to God because He also created them. Yet, He gave them to mankind for our use, to "have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth" (Genesis 1:28). Therefore, it is not wrong for man to use animals to help him do his work and even to kill them to use for food, clothing, and shelter. Whenever we are driving through the country and see the cows in the fields that men are raising for milk, beef, and leather, I am reminded of God’s statement, "For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills" (Psalm 50:10). Certainly, we should not mistreat or abuse the animals that God gave us because "A righteous man regards the life of his animal" (Proverbs 12:10). However, it is not wrong to use the animals that God Himself provided for our needs.
And all the people of the earth belong to God because He created them (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:7). "God, who made the world and everything in it…has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their habitations" (Acts 17:24-26). Though all humans are children of God by creation, only certain ones are children of God spiritually. "For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and your spirit, which are God’s" (1 Corinthians 6:20). Who are these people? "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Galatians 3:26-27). You belong to the Creator. Have you submitted your life to Him in obedience to His will?
